The Elementary Division of the Mississippi Music Educators Association will sponsor workshops throughout the 2017-2018 school year.  These workshops are designed to foster continuing teacher education and professional growth by providing new ideas, materials, and teaching strategies that may be implemented in the classroom.

School administrators; please consider the Fall Workshop as an opportunity for professional development for your music teacher(s).  If it is possible for the school district to provide membership fees, registration fees and/or a professional day for your teachers, this workshop will be a worthwhile use of time and money. Please make plans for your music instructor(s) to attend.

The Core of a Creative Classroom -Dena Byers

In this workshop, we will explore activities that focus on body percussion, speech, singing, pitched and non-pitched percussion and the learning stages used in Orff Schulwerk: Imitation, Exploration, Literacy and Improvisation.  We will also experience effective lessons that utilize a developmental, step by step teaching sequence.  Participants will sing, say, dance, play and experience the process to implement creative, collaborative and critical thinking skills that are essential in a 21st century music classroom.

Dena Byers, teaches K-5 music with the Durham Public Schools, in Durham, North Carolina and serves as the Lead Elementary Music Teacher for the district. She assists in the coordination of district events and professional development for her colleagues. Dena is also the Artistic Director of the Durham Children’s Choir.  She received her Bachelor’s degree from the University of Connecticut and her Master’s degree from the University of Minnesota. A National Board Certified teacher since 2005, Dena has presented at several AOSA Professional Development Conferences as well as for Orff chapters across the country. She served as a Region IV Representative on the AOSA National Board of Trustees from 2006-2009.   She has taught Level I basic pedagogy in Orff Schulwerk courses at Southern Methodist University in Texas, Samford University in Alabama, Baker University in Kansas, and Virginia Commonwealth University. Additionally, she has conducted several all-county honors choruses in North Carolina, Alabama, Georgia and Florida and was the recipient of the 2010 Jackson Parkhurst award as an outstanding North Carolina Music Educator.
